Concrete, which has been used extensively since the Roman Empire, is still widely used as an important material for world-famous buildings. Let us look at three of the most famous concrete structures around the world.
Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam, the world's largest dam, is located between the borders of Nevada and Arizona in the United States and was completed in 1936. In order to block the largest man-made lake in the United States, a huge dam was needed. The amount of concrete actually used to build it was enough to pave the road from San Francisco to New York. This huge structure protects Southern California and Arizona from catastrophic floods and provides water and power to Los Angeles and Southwest cities. It is also a popular tourist destination and attracts numerous tourists every year.
Opera House
Opera House in Sydney, Australia is one of the most-photographed buildings in the world due to its iconic white sail-shaped shell roof. The design of the Opera House was originally an international competition, submitted by 223 designers, and Jørn Utzon of Denmark won the contest. The final cost of the Opera House was $ 102 million. Almost 10 million people visit here every year.
The Statue of Christ the Redeemer
Christ the Redeemer, a recognizable monument in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was built using reinforced concrete and soapstone tiles. It took nine years to build and was completed in the year 1931. It is one of the largest statues of Jesus and the tallest Art Deco statue in the world, which boasts a height of 30 meters and an arm span of 28 meters. It is visited by 2 million people every year and the record number of visitors in a day was 14,000.
In San Diego, there is also a famous building built of concrete. The Geisel Library, the main library of the University of California San Diego, located just a few miles from Encinitas, is the iconic structure of UCSD. Pereira, the architect of the building, initially wanted to use steel-frames but changed the plan to use reinforced concrete to save on construction and maintenance costs.
Concrete is used around the world because it is more economical and durable than other construction materials.
